Timeline

2009

  • In January, the FHRA sent plans out to public bid. Poindexter Excavating was awarded the contract as General Contractor. Meyer Najem was selected as Owner’s Technical Representative.
  • In April, the FHRA closed on the third TIF Revenue bond issuance for the infrastructure construction project.
  • In May, the FHRA began construction on the $9 million construction project.
  • May 4th – Wheeler Avenue, Hawkins Road & Birtz Road closed and mobilization began with tree clearing, building & street demolition, sidewalk & curb removal and removal of existing utilities.
  • June 22nd – Started digging the east drainage pond that will feature a quarter mile asphalt jogging trail around its perimeter.
  • August – Roads start to look like roads with lime and sub-base. Poured headwalls at the Ravine Park and east drainage pond. Started pouring sidewalks on August 26th. Curbs are to be started on August 31st.
  • September – Wheeler Avenue, Hawkins Road, Birtz Road and Otis Avenue (from Hawkins Road south) will be complete and open to local traffic only.
  • September 28th – We will close 59th Street at Wheeler Avenue for the project duration.
  • October – Landscaping and seeding are scheduled for completion by month end.
  • December 18, 2009 is the estimated completion date for construction.

2008

  • In mid-October the FHRA finalized construction drawings and submitted plans to Lawrence for necessary approvals.
  • In December, the FHRA obtain final approvals for construction.

2007

  • In March, the FHRA sought and received zoning approval necessary to make the Lawrence Village at the Fort vision a reality.
  • In May, the FHRA released its first proposals for development of projects in the Lawrence Village at the Fort area.
  • Grand opening of the New Commissary/Exchange took place May 2007.

2006

  • In March, the FHRA broke ground on the construction of the New Commissary and Exchange at Historic Fort Harrison.
  • In June, the FHRA Board accepted the recommendations of the master plan and proceeded with steps necessary to implement the Lawrence Village at the Fort plan.
  • In August, the FHRA selected Browning Investments to serve as a development partner in the implementation of the Lawrence Village at the Fort plan.
  • The FHRA selects Cripe and Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf as their design team.

2005

  • In September, the FHRA, the United States Army, the Defense Commissary Agency and the Army Air Force Exchange Service completed an agreement that enabled the relocation of the Commissary and Post Exchange to 59th Street.
  • In October, the FHRA committed to a process to create a master plan for the Lawrence Village at the Fort.
  • In November, the FHRA started the site preparation for construction of the New Commissary and Exchange on 59th Street.

1999

  • Planners of the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority envisioned the opportunity to develop a unique experience for the final phase of redevelopment. With approximately 130 acres, the planners considered a variety of uses delivered in a style reminiscent of traditional neighborhoods. A key change moving forward was relocating the Harrison Village Commissary and Post Exchange to a site on the Fort Harrison U.S. Army Reserve Enclave on 59th Street, east of Lee Road.
